Years 7 and 8 meet visiting author Alex Scarrow

Monday saw Years 7 and 8 beginning the week with an inspiring and extremely energetic visit from historical fantasy author, Alex Scarrow.

Using an array of voices as well as physical humour, Alex shared his journey from wannabe rock star through graphic artist, computer games designer and screenplay writer to successful author.

Alex then talked us through the concept of his popular young adult series, TimeRiders, which sees visitors from the future travelling back in time to meddle with our history. The highlight for many in the audience was when Alex read aloud from the opening chapters of the first TimeRiders novel. You could have heard a pin drop in the dramatic pauses as Alex read almost entirely from memory, pacing the floor and acting out the scene.

The talk finished with an opportunity for the audience to ask questions, which allowed pupils to find out more about Alex’s inspiration and writing process. Then came the opportunity to buy books and have them signed by the author himself. The length of the queue at the sales desk confirmed the success of the morning, as has the enthusiasm for reading the titles still evident in the library and classrooms. Huge thanks to Alex for delivering such an engaging talk and for hopefully inspiring pupils to experiment with genre-bending ideas in their creative writing exercises.
