How our school committees contribute to responsibility & respect

Our new School Council and committees have been appointed after election bids from pupils across the school.

Children bravely stood up in front of their peers and gave speeches on why they should be put forward for a position, with multiple teachers commenting on how impressed they were with the speaking skills of the candidates.

As well as the School Council – which includes the Head Boy, Head Girl and two members of each year group – we also elected the Arts Committee, Catering Committee and newly formed Sport Committee. The groups provide forums for staff to get a sense of where pupils stand on matters relating to various aspects of school life, giving the elected children a chance to influence positive changes.

This is part of our commitment to introducing children to the concept of responsibility. It also engenders a sense of respect for their environment, giving them an insight into the difficulties of organising and managing a school.

Critical communication skills, that will help pupils as they progress into secondary education and beyond, are developed too. It’s certainly character building to speak in front of your classmates, and those elected have the challenge of putting their points across in a group setting.

Elected pupils met for some productive first meetings on Monday, and we look forward to seeing what ideas the children come up with over the rest of the academic year.
