Pastoral Welfare Committee & Counselling

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) meets with the Chaplain, the Boarding Houseparents, the Sister-in-Charge, Head of Learning Support and the Heads of Section for a weekly Pastoral Welfare Committee (PWC) meeting. The main purpose of the PWC is to further support children whose social well-being may, for any number of reasons, require discussion, monitoring and/or action to benefit the child and/or the school. The PWC aims to put into place strategies to assist the child in his or her development and emotional well-being.

At Junior King’s, the children’s wellbeing is central to the ethos of the school. As part of the provision of pastoral care, counselling is available to our pupils. The counselling service is embedded within the school environment, upholding the school’s values. Each child within the Junior King’s community is supported to flourish and to reach their full potential academically and emotionally.

Prior to the counselling commencing, parents and the counsellor will have a meeting to discuss the process and aid the counselling journey. During the sessions, pupils are supported by the counsellor to be curious, explore and reflect on something they are experiencing. Through this process, they can come to an understanding of their experience and learn coping strategies, which aids their development and builds resilience. The counsellor remains available to the parent throughout the process with a further meeting to summarise the work completed.

The counsellors at Junior King’s use an integrative approach combining talking therapies, art therapies and therapeutic play.
