Foundation Stage
Early Years education focuses on the physical, social, emotional, aesthetic and intellectual development of each child. All of these areas are given equal status and are experienced through carefully planned cross-curricular topics.
In order to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, the Foundation Stage provides a balance of play and teacher-directed activities. Through play the children can consolidate and practice their learning as well as develop their ability to cooperate, negotiate, meet new challenges, solve problems and deal with situations and emotions. During teacher-directed activities the children’s knowledge and skills can be fully developed in a more systematic and structured style.
Acknowledging that children learn best through first-hand experiences, the curriculum is formulated around topics and themes that are relevant to the young child. Although all areas are planned, there is flexibility to take into account the children’s own views and interests. The Nursery approach is via weekly or bi-weekly mini interlinking topics, while the Reception classes use half-term topics.
French is introduced in Reception and is taught in small groups by a specialist teacher. And a weekly half-hour dance session for both Nursery and Reception is taught by a dance specialist.
Opportunities for doing, reflecting and learning through first-hand experience are also key elements, with a particular emphasis on the potential learning experiences provided by the outdoor environment. Please see Forest School.
