Science
Science is fundamentally a way of learning. Science activities throughout the Junior King’s School are aimed at developing children’s intellectual and practical skills thus empowering them to explore and investigate the world around them.
Science teaches an understanding of natural phenomena. As a Department we aim to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do, to teach methods of enquiry and investigation, and to stimulate creative thought. Pupils learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way in which science will affect the future on a personal, national, and global level.
The approach to the teaching of science adopted at Junior King’s is based on first-hand practical experiences derived from the world of the child. As far as possible, we draw contexts for learning from areas of experience such as the home, the School and recreational environments. For Common Entrance and Scholarship, industry and commerce also provide reference points. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in science lessons, reflecting the diversity of experience required to enable children to access the whole science curriculum. Our principal aim is to develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding. We recognise that in all classes pupils have a wide range of scientific abilities, and we try to ensure that we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child.
