Mathematics
Calling all Mathletes!
All pupils in the Prep School now have their own unique username and password so that they can participate in as much Mathletics as they wish! Do play as much as you can at home and keep your maths teacher posted with any exciting news. If you encounter any problems with Mathletics at home then please do not hesitate to contact Mr Timmins.
Mathematics needs to be accessible to pupils at their pace and level and tight setting from year 5 ensures this at Junior King’s. Children can be moved up or down a set at any point in the year and the high levels of achievement in ALL sets is testament to the fact that this system is working very well. At present we have more sets than forms allowing for tighter setting. It is common for children in a lower set to outperform children in sets above them purely because they have been allowed to work at the right pace. In a previous year the top level 2 paper result was from a pupil in the lowest set and the average mark in some previous years for the lowest set has been around 70%,
There are 3 different levels of exam in year 8; Scholarship Maths (available for non scholars as well as scholars to take), level 3 calculator and non calculator (harder than the basic standard required for CE) level 2 calculator and non calculator (entry level for Senior King’s) and for those opting for other schools in the lowest set, level 1 calculator and non calculator. Scholarship Maths can be taken by pupils in set 1 and 2. There is no separate reward for doing well but it does mean pupils do not have to sit CE Maths from CE forms if they gain a good mark.
We enter many competitions in the year and have won or been in the top 3 in a number of them at some point. The UK Maths challenge for individuals and for a team , the Primary Maths challenge, Sutton Valence U12 and U13 competitions, Kent College U11, Ashford U10 and the Inter House Maths challenge, a noisy exciting whole school event in the Sports Hall where every pupil in the school participates. All teams’ points go toward the final house scores.
With a highly committed and enthusiastic team and extra clinics available we believe we can teach any child to thrive and have success in maths. A weekly session on laptops is the highlight for most pupils where they practise tables against the clock and can challenge for a place on the top 20 in the school, and also have time to explore maths puzzles and games or practice rote work on CAMI, (a software programme with self checking rote work).
The Maths department is very proud of its track record and achievements and is confident that what it provides is allowing children to achieve more than their expected levels of potential.
