English as an additional language
As a boarding school, the Junior King’s School welcomes pupils from all over the world into its community and provides a supportive environment for those who join us with a limited experience of English. We believe that it is vital that children of all nationalities are supported as they integrate into a new culture and system, and that their own languages and traditions are recognised and celebrated.
Our small but thriving English as an Additional Language department offers individual and small group tuition, tailored to meet the specific needs of children. There is an emphasis upon the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as focused work on grammar and vocabulary.
A variety of published and school-based resources are used to create an individualised programme for each pupil. Continuous and close liaison between the EAL staff and other departments ensures that pupils develop an academic language and are supported in developing their skills and knowledge across the whole curriculum. Additional help is also provided for children as they prepare for Common Entrance in Year 8 and the vast majority of pupils go on to achieve a very high level of academic success.
